A few weeks ago I had one of those shoots that reminds me why I love photography in the first place. I'd been invited by Jess, owner of Blackbird Creative Studio here on Vancouver Island, to bring a boudoir session into her Parksville studio space — and to let her capture some behind-the-scenes video of the whole thing, since she runs the studio solo.
If you know Blackbird Creative Branding, you know the studio as the go-to spot for branding sessions, family photography, and headshots around Nanaimo and Parksville. Bright, clean, polished. So when Jess asked if I'd shoot something moodier in that same space, I was in immediately. I wanted to show that the studio could hold a completely different kind of light and emotion, soft shadows, warmth, intimacy, without losing what makes it work so well for its usual clients.
My client for the session was Ally, and this was actually our first time working together. She came in a little nervous, like most people do before their first boudoir session, and left glowing. That transformation is honestly my favourite part of this work. Boudoir isn't about performing for the camera, it's about a client seeing herself the way the people who love her already do. We leaned into shadow and directional light, but honestly, the day was anything but serious. Ally and I danced to ridiculous music, laughed constantly, and got more than a little cheeky, which is exactly the energy a boudoir session needs. I often pose myself first to show a client what a shot looks like, and between that and Ally fully letting loose, even Jess seemed surprised at how quickly she relaxed and just dropped into the moment.
While we worked, Jess moved around us capturing behind-the-scenes video, documenting how a single studio space can transform completely depending on the photographer and the story being told. I'll be sharing a clip of it in this post. It was a fun reminder that a great studio isn't just four walls and good light, it's a flexible canvas.
If you're in Nanaimo or Parksville and you've been curious about booking a boudoir session, or you're a fellow creative curious about renting a moody, versatile space, this collaboration is a great example of what's possible. Huge thanks to Jess and the whole Blackbird Creative Studio team for having me, and to Ally for trusting me with her first session.
